The club offers an extensive programme with a diverse range of events, from casual cruising to amateur racing.
The following table shows the remaining events for the current season, and is updated on a regular basis throughout the season. Note: You can click or tap on a row to display (or hide) a brief description of the event.
|Status||Dates||When||Days||Event||Boats/Berths||Vacancies (skipper/mate/crew)||Sailing from||Price range (£)|
|Confirmed||27 - 29 Mar||Fri 4pm to Sun 5pm||2||Early Season Shake Down||1 / 8||0 / 0 / 3||Hamble||110 - 140|
|Last year’s End of Season Rally unfortunately had to be postponed due to bad weather. Fairview Sailing have kindly let us move the booking, so we’re proposing an early season ‘shake down’ on this last weekend in March. On the water you’ll need to wrap up warm but once in front of a roaring fire in an old English pub it’'ll all be worth it! The costs are much reduced (and completely known) so why not grab yourself a bargain sailing weekend? Note for those who were booked on the 2019 EoS Rally: If you can make this weekend, great. If not, please let me know alternative dates. You'll also be due monies back from the higher-priced Rally fees.|
|Provisional||17 - 19 Apr||Fri eve to Sun eve||2||Kick Start Weekend & AGM dinner||2 / 16||1 / 1 / 3||Hamble||160 - 190|
|As it’s name suggests, the Kick Start Weekend is the club’s first event of the season. It is an opportunity to brush away those winter cobwebs and get your sea legs back. Saturday evening will be the club’s AGM followed by dinner (included in the sailing fees), venue TBC.|
|Provisional||18 Apr||Sat 7pm||AGM dinner only||TBC||35|
|Those who can’t come along to the Kick Start Weekend are encouraged to come along for the AGM on the Saturday evening, followed by dinner, venue TBC (but somewhere on or near the Solent).|
|Provisional||1 - 3 May||Fri 6.30pm to Sun 4pm||2||Training Weekend||1 / 5||0 / 0 / 5||Hamble||280 - 350|
|We’re always keen on promoting good yachtsmanship, so we are again teaming up with Urban Truant for this year’s training weekend. The cost includes a qualified RYA Instructor to join the boat for two days and help attendees refine their sailing skills, perhaps in anticipation of an exam later in the year, or just to make an assessment of their ‘readiness’ for taking an RYA qualification. Depending on your interest, the weekend’s training will be varied or targeted towards a specific level. Important: The deadline for booking this event is Monday 2nd March.|
|Provisional||17 - 22 May||Sun eve to Fri noon||5||Cross-Channel Mid-Week Cruise||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 5||Hamble||230 - 300|
|A longer event, starting on Sunday evening for a sail across the Channel — perhaps to the lovely Fécamp, Honfleur, St Vaast or Barfleur — before returning for Friday afternoon. No doubt sampling tasty French cuisine will be on the agenda, from local restaurants, delicatessens and supermarkets! Note: Given the intended passage, this event has been priced based on a larger boat than typical weekend events. ALSO note the date change from the draft review programme.|
|Provisional||22 - 25 May||Fri eve to Mon eve||3||Scottish Cruise (Bank Holiday)||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 5||TBC||TBC|
|A long weekend sailing in Scotland, offering some stunning scenery and superb sailing. With the sad demise of the White Horse Sailing Club, I’m hoping that we can get a full boat together for this event in Scotland. The destination is TBC, so if you’re interested in exploring somewhere in particular in Scotland, get your preferences in now! Note: Costs will be advised once we have a preferred location and charter options.|
|Provisional||29 - 31 May||Fri eve to Sun eve||2||Round The Island Race||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 5||Solent||320 - 400|
|One of the world’s most famous annual yacht races, with nearly 1,500 yachts and 15,000 sailors competing in a one-day race around the Isle of Wight. The 2020 edition of the Round the Island Race takes place on Saturday 30 May, a few weeks earlier than usual to accommodate tidal conditions. It truly lives up to its reputation as a ‘Race for All’ - welcoming sailors from all over the world, with professional sailors, families and first-time racers competing next to one another around the stunning coastline of the Isle of Wight. Important: The deadline for booking this event is Monday 2nd March.
Note: The pricing is TBC and is based on last year’s costs which included two nights berthing Cowes Yacht Haven but not race entry.
|Provisional||6 - 13 Jun||Sat to Sat (TBC)||7||Mediterranean Cruise||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 5||Balearics (TBC)||300 - 400|
|It’s been several years since the club organised a Mediterranean trip, so it’s about time we had another one! The Balearic islands are a suggestion, but really it’s down to those attending to decide. If you’re up for some early summer sailing in the sun, let me know where you would prefer to explore.|
|Provisional||3 - 10 Jul||Fri 6pm to Fri 4pm||7||St George's Channel and Ireland Cruise||1 / 6||1 / 1 / 3||Neyland||250 - 300|
|For those wanting a longer sailing trip and some good sea miles, why not try this new entry to the programme. The yacht charter will be from Neyland in Pembrokeshire, setting sail across St George’s Channel for a few days on the Irish coast before returning a week later. The weather in 2019 didn't permit the crossing, so we’re having another attempt!|
|Provisional||16 - 19 Jul||Thu eve to Sun eve||3||Taittinger Regatta (incl. pre-race training)||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 5||Solent||200 - 260|
|The Taittinger Regatta is a spectacular event with competitive racing, hosted by the Royal Solent Yacht Club in Yarmouth on the Isle of Wight. The club’s event starts on the Thursday evening, with Friday dedicated to pre-race training and a sail over to Yarmouth in time for the Taittinger Champagne Reception and Club Supper on Friday evening. Racing starts on Saturday with the Towers Dinner in the evening and more racing on Sunday, followed by a hog roast and prize giving. Sailing fees include race entry and mooring.|
|Provisional||31 Jul - 3 Aug||Fri eve to Mon eve||3||Scottish Cruise (Scottish Bank Holiday)||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 3||Largs||150 - 200|
|The second of our long weekend sailing events in Scotland. Again, the destination is TBC, so if you’re interested get your preferences in now! Also, the dates are currently the Scottish Bank Holiday dates but could be moved to the English dates instead; again, let me know your preference.|
|Provisional||28 - 31 Aug||Fri 4pm to Mon eve||3||Cross-Channel Dash (Bank Holiday)||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 4||Hamble||170 - 220|
|Back after many years of being absent from the club’s programme is a cross-Channel trip, but achieved in just a Bank Holiday weekend. Attendees will need to get to the marina by about 4pm on the Friday, ready to set sail by about 6pm. The night-sailing ensures an early arrival in France on Saturday, and 24–36 hours to enjoy their delicious food, vin, bière and cidre, before the sail back home.|
|Provisional||11 - 13 Sep||Fri eve to Sun eve||2||City Sailing Series - John Lewis Regatta||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 6||Solent||160 - 210|
|The third of four City Sailing Series in the sailing season, with this one hosted by the John Lewis Partnership sailing club. There are race(s) on Saturday and usually Sunday, with Saturday’s (optional) evening dinner in one of Cowes’ yacht clubs.|
|Provisional||18 - 20 Sep||Fri eve to Sun eve||2||City Sailing Series - Finn Trophy & Crossley Cup||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 3||Solent||150 - 200|
|The last of four City Sailing Series weekends in the sailing season, organised by the Lloyds Insurance, Baltic & Stock Exchanges, with Saturday dinner in the Royal Yacht Squadron in Cowes (TBC). It should be a superb weekend!|
|Provisional||2 - 4 Oct||Fri eve to Sun eve||2||Solent Cruise||1 / 8||1 / 1 / 6||Hamble||140 - 180|
|One of the club’s regular events, a casual cruise around the Solent in early October. No racing. No formalities. Just simple, late-season sailing.|
|Provisional||16 - 18 Oct||Fri eve to Sun eve||2||End of Season Rally||2 / 16||2 / 2 / 9||Hamble||160 - 190|
|The most popular of all the club’s events, and a great opportunity to catch up with lots of club members. In 2018 we had enough attendees to warrant three boats, but not so many in 2019. Hopefully we can finish the first DHSC season of the 2020’s in style with a well-attended rally again! The semi-formal Saturday evening dinner (included in the sailing fee) is a great social event: venue suggestions are welcome.|
|Provisional||17 Oct||Sat 7pm||EoS dinner only||TBC||40|
|Those who can’t come along to the End of Season Rally are welcome to join everyone for dinner on the Saturday evening, venue TBC (but somewhere on or near the Solent).|
